Humanity is changing again. Kind of like how it always has, but this time the stakes are higher. As of the time of writing this we know that computer scientists are forty years into reseraching and experimenting with what’s possible in artificial intelligence. Within that timeframe we now turn the page in history to the smart machine age and we humans are in need of modeling, coaching, parenting, nurturing and having a say in what the artificial general intelligence grows up to be.
This website is the home of a life-long researh project began by myself, Chad Treanor, a filmmaker in Houston that’s lived and worked through multiple paradigm shifts in my lifetime. From no internet, to dial up, to cable, to broadband, to 3G/4G/5G mobile that enabled the internet 1.0/2.0/3.0. I grew up as a storyteller, a filmmaker and through years of discovery now call myself a digital explorer. I’d like this first post to serve as an invitation to everyone to come along for this journey as we transition into our next level of human ingenuity combined with artificial general intelligence or AGI.
Here’s a little bit about what this is whole idea is.
The Big Idea
The big idea behind What to Pack for the Future idea was born from seeing where artists could bridge the technical knowledge from the computer and data scientists to the rest of the world. Every day we’re going to be combing through the complex news stories and AI model releases and then explore, experiment, and offer our point of view with helpful guides and resources for every day people to feel like they get what’s going on with artificial intelligence.
Practicing safe human-centered design, responsible exploration techniques and humanity focused outcome all comes together on this site.
Direction
What To Pack for the Future is an idea to concentrate the best possible skills, attributes and habits for the future of humanity. A righteously lofty goal, right? We know, it was a bit much for us too even just to write it down. From the beginning, this has always felt too big, but that was the reason why.
Today, everything feels too big and too fast. So, we’re going to make it smaller and slower.
What To Pack For The Future will be here for you as a beacon of light in the darkness of what could be humanity’s direction if we don’t start to rise to the occasion and start bringing our best selves forward.
Methodologies
Research
This team uses research tools including digital and artificial intelligence-assisted tools to thoughtfully gather information from credible, varied sources and check claims against original evidence.
We consider the context and limitations from our findings, distinguish established facts from the interpretation & uncertainty, and make our methods as clear and transparent as possible.
Sense-making
We start by using our freestyle thinking methodologies to question, explore connections, discover unexpected findings, and ultimately reveal recommendations and learnings that will benefit all of humanity.
Everyone on planet earth is looking for help to make sense of new things like technology or law so they can start adapting for a better life faster than we used to.
The method to the magic is how we do our research, imaginative thinking and pure joy of creating works of art and literally anything that will help other humans comprehend our findings as easily as possible.
Create understanding
After the rigorous research and sense making, we turn our findings into works of art that make complex ideas easier to understand.
Through creative forms such as storytelling and visual expression, we invite audiences to engage with what we’ve discovered and see why it matters.
Each work remains grounded in honest evidence while opening new ways to consider what our findings mean for people and the future. These are what we pack with us on our journey into the future.
Invitation
We all have something to offer and contribute to the future we build. This website will serve as a home base for my research, my collections, the contributions from those who want to come build this place with us. We’re here to make these turbulent changes go as smoothly as possible with as much human agency and influence as we can. The best way I can describe our shared scenario is that Artificial Intelligence is humanity’s shared baby left on our doorstep. Now we all have a shared responsibility to raise it and guide it.
We ask you to come contribute what you have to offer for the brightest, safest, and most secure future we can collectively offer our great grand-children.
-Chad
